Cyril Fonseca has been playing the tuba for approximately thirteen years, but has also studied piano (for 22 years), classical singing, conducting and music writing. He graduated from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal with a master's degree with distinction in Pierre Beaudry's class, moving on to the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart in Germany, under the tutelage of Stefan Heimann and Thomas Brunmayr in 2019. An avid student, he began an Artist Diploma at McGill University's Schulich School of Music with Austin Howle, and completed a Master's degree in Cultural Business Management at HEC Montréal along with a Bachelor's degree in Composition at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal in Nicolas Gilbert's class.
Cyril has honed his skills at workshops (Domaine Forget, PRISMA, Pommersfelden, Orchestre des Amériques, etc.) with such great masters of the instrument as Oysteen Baadsvik, Sergio Carolino, Carol Jantsch, Gérard Buquet, Micaël Cortone d'Amore, Joe Skillen, Chris Lee, Paul Beauchesne, Lance Nagels and Martin Schippers.
Graduating from a chamber music competition with distinction in April 2020, he is increasingly being discovered as a soloist and chamber musician, notably with the Orchestre de la Francophonie quintet, which played at the Busan Maru International Music Festival 2018 in South Korea. He can be seen performing at the Festival Unisson in 2020, in a number of Quebec brass quintets (CUzN), and as a soloist at the Place des Arts Foundation gala on June 1, 2021. In 2020, Cyril won 3rd prize in his category at the OSM 2020 Competition, as well as the Orchestre des Amériques prize.
Recipient of the Governor General's Medal, a Fondation Desjardins bursary for community involvement in 2018, a Jeunesses Musicales Canada AIDA Foundation bursary and the Conservatoire 2021 career development bursary, Cyril performs with the Orchestre symphonique de Drummondville (OSD), l'orchestre symphonique de l'Estuaire (OSE) and is developing several projects as a composer, having won 2nd prize in composition at the Caneres 2023 Competition and the Conservatoire's external programs.
