IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE ALLIANCE CHORALE DU QUÉBEC
This academy is intended for children’s and youth choir conductors at the elementary and secondary levels, as well as for teachers and musicians who wish to discover youth choral conducting or deepen their skills.
Over five days, participants will take part in an intensive training program combining artistic reflection, practical pedagogical tools, and collaborative practice. The topics covered will include, among others:
- Warm-ups and vocal technique: physiological characteristics related to the vocal work of children and adolescents;
- The conductor’s language: learning choral conducting gestures, positive leadership, and communication with young singers and with audiences;
- Pedagogy: teaching songs in unison and polyphony;
- Rehearsal management: planning and organizing rehearsals, repertoire research, and creating thematic programs adapted to the school environment.
From the very beginning of the training and throughout the modules, participants will be encouraged to sing and conduct. They will therefore be able to put vocal exercises and warm-ups into practice, learn proper conducting gestures, and practice them by conducting their peers. They will practice teaching songs by following the steps of the Kodály method and will apply the tips and strategies that make choir rehearsals fun and dynamic for young singers.
The training will alternate between presentations, hands-on workshops, individual work, and small-group discussions, encouraging the sharing of experiences among teachers from different school settings. Each participant will leave with tools that can be applied immediately, repertoire ideas adapted to their own context, and an in-depth reflection on their conducting and leadership style.
Special workshops will be offered during the week:
- Individual (or small-group) vocal technique coaching
- Improvisation, circlesinging, and movement-based music workshop
- Repertoire reading workshops, song research, and song selection for an appropriate artistic program
The week-long program will conclude with a small sharing concert on Friday, August 14, in the afternoon.
